My Background
I have been creating user experience sound for almost two decades. I worked as an in-house sound designer for Nokia (2002 –14) and Microsoft (2014 –15), before becoming an independent contractor in late 2015. I now work for a range of different clients, satisfying an increasing need for highly specialised sound design in digital user experiences (Audio UX).
I have created interaction sounds and notifications for billions of mobile devices worldwide, whilst developing some of the most brand-recognisable sounds in the world. As our everyday technology experiences evolve, user interface sound has also become more critical outside of mobiles. This is reflected in my more recent projects which have included the Audio UX design of smart glasses, navigational aids for the visually impaired, a smart door lock, and hospital alarms and patient-monitoring devices.
My Approach
Sound has the ability to elicit emotions more than any other design element, whether positive or negative – and this is why Audio UX should be centrally integrated into the overall product design process. Audio UX shouldn’t be treated as a separate entity or as an afterthought. It should be given the same level of focus and scrutiny as any other product design or UX element.
My approach to Audio UX is strictly design-led – sound that is first and foremost designed for the user and function, whilst reflecting design aesthetics. As we evolve away from screens towards an audio or voice-first interface, Audio UX has never been more important. Audio UX should be designed optimally to the finest detail, sustaining a highly meticulous and considerate approach throughout.
I work individually or as part of a design team or collaboration. As part of my work for Masimo, I’m currently collaborating with Professor Judy Edworthy, who is known as the Godmother of Alarms. I’m also a certified member of the WeAreTen community, a virtual studio of top tier providers and global innovators within the healthcare sector.
My Services
Audio UX should increase usability, enhance the UX, and further communicate your brand. I will work with you or as part of your design or UX team, ensuring that your audio experience is appropriately and expertly designed.
I can design sounds for a pre-defined function list or work with you at a preliminary stage of design thinking. I can provide expertise on audio branding – focusing in on key brand sounds, whilst exploring an array of sonic palettes to enhance your brand. The end result will be one holistic set of sounds, including both highly functional and brand-identifiable sounds. If required, I can also help facilitate user testing at various stages of the process, based on a qualitative or quantitative approach. I’m also experienced in project management, having set up and successfully run many complex projects throughout my career.
I primarily work from my own studio, but can also work on-site for closer contact with your implementation and design team. My working contracts typically range between 1 to 6 months, reflecting the scope and level of collaboration.
