Case Study: Mobile Audio Brand Refresh

In early 2018, the Nokia Tune caught up with me again, over 4 years since leaving the company. A lot had happened to Nokia since I left to join Microsoft as part of the transition in 2015. The newly formed company HMD Global brought the former Nokia Devices from Microsoft, whilst gaining exclusive rights to the Nokia Brand name. The bottom line is that the Nokia mobile brand lived on.

I was essentially asked by Ben Lord, a former colleague who had been supporting HMD Global, to bring my 2013 Nokia Tune version back to life. Various new directions were explored, but ultimately it was decided to maintain the 2013 version whilst giving it a refresh, a new ‘lick of paint’.

The 2018 refresh can be previewed below. For the preceding 2013 version that I created, check out the Nokia & Microsoft - Ringtones & Alerts section.

I would also go on to create the default alerts, refreshing them from the 2013 versions and using the same principles as used for the Nokia Tune update.

I would then create a number of additional ringtones and alerts to compliment the refreshed core tonality. A couple of these can be heard below.

All upcoming Nokia devices, including the Nokia 8 Smartphone, would include this new holistic set of core brand sounds.  Long live Nokia!
