Case Study: Nokia Ringtones & Alerts for billions of devices worldwide - My selection from 2002 to 2015

I started creating ringtones and alerts for Nokia in November 2002. I had just graduated with my Music Degree in Cardiff, and moved to the (extremely cold) Tampere in Finland. I was part of a newly formed Nokia Sound Team, required due to the imminent MIDI-era of ringtones - MIDI being a big step up from the limited monophonic-style ringtones popularized with the early Nokia phones.

Here I’ve shared a selection of some of my favourite ringtones and alerts over the 13 years I was employed by Nokia, including the last year and a half when my employment transferred to Microsoft. This selection more or less starts from around the time we created ‘audio’ ringtones (circa 2005). I created hundreds of ringtones and alerts prior to this, but these were mostly created using various MIDI soundbanks. They are from a bygone age.

The first selection includes default ringtones and alerts, consisting of the Core Renewal work I led in 2013 and the subsequent refresh following the introduction of the Microsoft Lumia brand in 2014.

This section includes generic ringtones, message alerts, and alarm clock alerts.

This second section includes musical ringtones in a specific style - Classical, Electronic, Pop, and Rock.
